Anemonis – from then to now
Sometimes it happens that small things grow - without anyone has intended to do so. And that’s how it is concerning Anemonis. What started as an Uni-Project at the Institute of German philology in the course Queer Studies from Professor Susanne Hochreiter in November 2004, grew into the last months up to a real feature film. Without any kind of financial support or sponsors. Without any kind of support from people who are working in the film industry. But for the most part cast with amateurs, only worked with natural light and filmed with a usual home-camera - this is the growing-up of this NO-Budget-Feature-Film with nearly zero Euro production costs.
If you turn up the television in times like ours or if you decide to go to the cinema you will often get to see films in Hollywood-Style (or directly made in Hollywood) - huge Big-Budget-Productions on the highest technical level. But behind all of these commerce productions there are also some films, above all European productions, which leave this mainstream-production-course and really try to reach one thing: the spreading of the art.
Anemonis is no conventional feature film. It has got a length of about 72 minutes. This of course. But it consists of eight short scenes which deal with one: queer ways of living. And this in a really varied and in some parts abstract way. Therefore it’s clear that it’s not possible to put Anemonis into a drawer - which has never been intended as well. Anemonis is a film in eight scenes. Not really in dogma-style but with more than a breeze avant-gardism. Like the film production has been so is also the product: incredible open.
The varied ways of living are the central concern in Anemonis. The through the film leading theme is the queerness. Followed - with only one exception - from the love. And the not being able to escape from this (heterosexual) world which tends to confuse the appearance with the being. And although it’s not possible to define Anemonis it’s nevertheless possible to say one thing: Anemonis is no comedy film. And as such one never been intended.
While others spend several years into the post-production, in Anemonis the script is the most important thing. The script and the themes. An inseparable unit. Beside the travesty and the homosexuality concerning different focal points (Islam, Coming out, Homo-marriage) also the bisexuality, the transgender-problem as well as the heterosexuality and the love over several age-limits have been dealt with. And to make Anemonis even more special the sodomy and the asexuality followed during the filming. On the whole I wrote this script during very little hours without a plot. How I’m used to just sit in front of the PC and start writing. Without intention. (just with this one - namely to deal with the so called queerness) And the result is in this case Anemonis.
It’s the first time for me that I appear not only as scriptwriter and director of a feature film but also as producer, editor and director of photography. Scopes of duties which put the one or other hurdle into my way during the last months and which will do as well in the future. Actresses/actors came and left, scenes were changed, shorted, lengthened or newly written. (in night-work for my part). Contacts to people from the film industry turned often faster into non-contacts as I had arranged them before.
And if Anemonis is one thing for sure so this is a fighter. A revolutionary. One who grow up from nothing and followed its way to the cinema, festivals and televisions of its watchers - without fear. And this potential it is also which I ever will summon up to bring queer themes to the public. With passion and devotion. As well as with the knowing to not do it just for the themes but also for the own dreams - to never stop fighting for equality and acceptance. For all.
So that Anemonis will reach its goal!
In the name of all, above all in the name of Anemonis
